Shanghai Museum

Shikumen

Yuyuan Garden and Bazaar

Shikumen is a traditional Shanghainese architectural style combining Western and Chinese elements that first appeared in the 1860s. Because of their flammability, this type of construction was banned by concession authority in Shanghai. However, a lovely little area where took place the first communist congress in China has succeeded to survive. These close and one-or-two-story houses are exceptions among all the buildings and the skyscrapers in the newest districts.

This little area host the place where took place the first communist congress in China. Now it is an interesting museum where you can learn more about the Chinese history in the XXth century.

Let’s enter this typical Chinese garden, created in the XVIth century. You’ll discover there fishy ornament lakes, symbolic sculptures and old houses full of typical and ancient Chinese items, in the middle of a lush vegetation.

Around the garden there is a huge bazaar, a very animated maze where you will be able to buy Chinese typical products and counterfeits. In any case you shall negociate the price !

Jade Budha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple, founded in 1882, is composed of several rooms where you will see many tall and colorful statues, whose the most precious and impressive is the Jade Budha. If you are lucky, you would attend a bouddhist ceremony, during which believers will sing religious prayers.

Skyscrapers grows every year, and one of them are, architectural masterpieces.

Malls and shopping streets

There are many shopping malls in Shanghai, but one of them is particularly huge and impressive : the Global Harbour. Recently built in the style of Antiquity, you will find there many Western brands and restaurants, a supermarket and Chinese shops. If you want to find a sort of Chinese Times Square, you should go to the East Nanjing Road, which host all the most famous Western and Chinese shops.
